Baby Bear/Ben

December 18, 1999
An owner who was moving out of his townhouse to an apartment and could no longer keep his Chow brought Baby Bear/Ben to us. Baby Bear had been rather badly matted, so the owner had him shaved down close to the skin. Because most Chows are brought to us with the name Bear, or some rendition thereof, we changed his name to Baby Ben. We had him for about eight months before anyone put in an application to adopt him.
One day a couple came by the PetsMart and fell in love with our Ben whose coat was slowly growing back and had a gaping hole in his leg from an argument he'd had with another Chow we had at the time. The gentleman is a known CNN reporter and his wife has an important job at the Capital. We took Ben for his home inspection interview on Capital Hill and placed him with his new parents who cherish our little boy. They ended up having to change his name back to Bear. It is just the strangest thing as he won't answer to Ben at home with his parents, but always does so with his Aunt and Uncle. He is very well loved and stops by to see his Aunt and Uncle from time to time, and actually sleeps over sometimes while his parents are out of town.
