Who We Are

Adopt-A-Chow Rescue

(Chow Rescue is a volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue and placement of Chows in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.)

We provide services from rescuing Chows from shelters before euthinization to helping owners understand their new pets better.  We spend a good amount of time picking up the dogs from past owners who for one reason or another can no longer keep their pets, SPCA groups that often hold on to the dogs until we have the room to take them in, shelters where most Chows have at best a week to live, and many times good samaritans who literally rescue the dogs from the streets.  We then take the dogs in for medical checkups, innoculations, and spaying or neutering.  Sometimes the dogs need more than the normal medical care and we take them to specialists that operate to correct the dogs’ physical problems such as hip dysplasia and entropia of the eyes (that can eventually cause the dog to go blind), and the treatment for heartworms.  We have people who are willing to serve as foster homes where the dogs are cleaned up, groomed, and socialized.  The dogs are evaluated and then placed in an adoptive home where they are best suited.  The volunteers fund the work from their own pockets, hoping to recuperate the money in the form of adoption fees.

To adopt one of our charges, we take an application, visit you in your home to do a home inspection for dog readiness, and get a feeling for the personality of the family environment so we can better find the right dog for your home.  You get to know us and have a continued association with us from the time you adopt your chow for the rest of his/her life.  The average age of the Chows is one to four years.  Puppies are seldom abandoned and there is always a long waiting list of up to a year.

If you are intetrested in a puppy, we rarely get puppies. When we do get puppies, they normally go to families that have already adopted older Chows from us and have exhibited the ability to properly raise and work with a Chow, or people who have had Chows in the past and shown that they can do the same. It is very rare that we ever adopt puppies to first time Chow owners.

There are advantages to adopting an older dog:

Chow Rescue offers a 30 day foster period--if for any reason the pet doesn’t work out in your home, we will take the dog back with an advanced notification of 72 hours (so we can make arrangements for the housing of the pet).  If you move, you need to notify us of your move and new address so we can let the Chow Rescue group in your new location know that one of our dogs is moving to their area.  If your pet ever gets lost, it should have the Chow Rescue identification tag on it so when found, the Rescue group will be notified and can help return your pet home.  Remember, should your Chow get loose/lost, call Chow Rescue immediately so we can aid you in finding your pet (the first two hours are critical for recovery).  If you ever decide you no longer want or can keep your Chow, you need to return the dog to Chow Rescue so the pet can be placed in a new home that has undergone the same process as you once did.  This way the dog is always protected from ending up in a pound, living in the streets, or possibly abused by a new owner that hasn’t been qualified the same way you were.  Never be concerned about calling Chow Rescue for anything that you need in information or advice.
