Princess' puppies

Pups 3 -- 31 August 2000

Princess and her family were rescued from the animal shelter in Queenstown, MD. Her mate was also brought in but he was destroyed immediately because when they reached in to get the puppies, he growled and snapped at them, so he was labeled vicious. The puppies and Princess were about to be put down when the animal control officer decided she would take them and contact a rescue group. She contacted us when the puppies were about 2 weeks old. One of our members drove up there to pick up Princess and the pups. Princess was very protective about her puppies, but after seeing that she would not be hurt, she relaxed. The puppies were named by the original foster care giver: Cindy, Chloe, Karma, & Buttercup.

When living with her initial foster care giver, this is how Kokuanani (originally called Cindy) was described, "Cindy is extremely gentle and good natured. She stands up for herself though. She was the smallest in the litter. She too, is very tuned into people. She will sit quitely and stare you down until you pick her up for hugs." Cindy has a mole on the side of her muzzle so she was christened Cindy Crawford!. ;-} She and her sisters love playing non stop and their mom loves to get in the middle of them and play along.

Kokuanani was the last to figure out how to go up and down the stairs due to her size. But once she did, she was very good at finding her way back into the house via the doggie door...she's not as good yet about going out the door, but comes in just fine!

Kokuanani has real cute sense of humor! She and her sisters love eating out of the raised food dishes. They climb up on them and pick out one kibble at a time. But once the dishes are empty, Kokuanani will start out by biting on the dishes. Then she will climb up on them and give you that bright eyed look of hers. If you continue to ignore her, she will eventually sit in the dishes...this eventually becomes a bed until you finally get up and fill the dishes once again! ;-]

Kokuanani not only likes climbing all over the food dishes, but is constantly climbing into the water dish to play. Sometimes, she just climbs into the dish and sits in the water or stands with her front paws in the water. Consequently, the water is constantly very muddy, needing to be changed frequently. ;-]

Princess, Kokuanani, and Sydney 26 November 2000

Cindy is now renamed...Kokuanani (beautiful helper). Her new family fell in love with our little "fox face" girl and took her home to their older Chow, Katrina. The two of them play really well with one another and when Katrina has had enough, Kokua heeds her elder.

Kokua still loves to get her feet wet, but is much better about sitting in the dish of water than before. ;-] She loves giving kisses and licking the hair of her young human brother. She picks up a toy about the same size as she is and carries it around the house shaking it. She is just such a delight and her new family is very happy to have added her to the family unit.
