3/25/03 We received the following messages:

There is another Chow girl named Ebony that is desperately seeking a foster and may join the Princess at the same kennel. She was dumped at the Montgomery Co. MD shelter because the children were bored with her. She is 8 y.o. pedigreed black Chow who is being treated by the vet for an illness (I believe it was a UTI).

3/25/03 Subj: RE: Rockville Chow details:

The dog's name is Ebony. She is currently at Negola's Ark Hospital and will be transferred to Hayfield on Thursday. We are trying to arrange this right now.

She is a papered/pedigreed black female (a "special order when she was a pup") who weighs 35 pounds. She is eight years old according to her give up form. She was suffering from pyrometria (uterine infection) but has been spayed.

Temperament: calm, non-destructive, non-fence jumper, non-snapper, friendly to strangers, likes children, not afraid of thunder, has received obedience training (knows "lay down"), asks to go outside by waiting at the door, not allowed on the furniture. Good with cats, not with all dogs (this last evaluation appears to be based on very brief observation in the kennel – in my humble opinion this is questionable because she was sick and not in an environment in which Chows perform well under the best of circumstances)

Give up reason: My children are too lazy to walk her and she needs a fenced yard to run around in.

No picture yet. Sounds like a nice dog.

3/25/03 To which I responded:

Oh my gosh! I wish I could remember when I got that call... I got a call a few days back from a woman who had a Chow that she said she needed to get rid of because her children had bored with it and would not care for it or take it for walks anymore. And since they live in a TH, she said that it was not fair to the dog, so she needed to find a new home. I told her we couldn't take her in, and since she did not have an email address, I told her to take the Chow to WARL since it was the only NO-KILL in the area, knowing full well that she would take it to a shelter. I wonder if this is not the same Chow? I didn't get the name of the Chow, and she'd said it was about 6 yrs., but you know how people are about age of pets sometimes... :{{

This week Ebony went to her foster home after having recuperated at the vet’s office. One of our associates went to the foster home to take some pictures for the website. She is really sweet and playful and romped around the yard with the husband of our associate.

After taking care a number of other things, we stopped by Ebony’s foster care home to get more pictures of her for her page. She was really happy to see company and jumped up to get hugs and kisses, wagging her tail the whole time. But while we were taking her pictures, we found out that she is also very strong willed. At one point I tried to physically turn her around, and placed my one hand on her backside, and she got very upset with me, but right after that she was back to wanting to jump up to get affection. When Michael was trying to work her and I was taking the pictures, as he was trying to get her to sit for the pictures, she raised her lip at him. I guess we just pushed her a bit faster than she was ready for since she had literally just seen us for the first time. But she was quite up for all the hugs, scratches, and kisses she could get! ;-}
