Princess' puppies

Pups 3 -- 31 August 2000

Princess and her family were rescued from the animal shelter in Queenstown, MD. Her mate was also brought in but he was destroyed immediately because when they reached in to get the puppies, he growled and snapped at them, so he was labeled vicious. The puppies and Princess were about to be put down when the animal control officer decided she would take them and contact a rescue group. She contacted us when the puppies were about 2 weeks old. One of our members drove up there to pick up Princess and the pups. Princess was very protective about her puppies, but after seeing that she would not be hurt, she relaxed. The puppies were named by the original foster care giver: Cindy, Chloe, Karma, & Buttercup.

Of Kalua (originally called Chloe), the initial foster care giver said: "Chloe is very active and is sort of the 'leader' of the pack. She's sweet, loves to cuddle when she's sleepy. She's very playful - loves to muck around in the water. I call her my 'spring dog'. Chloe invented turning over the water dish and playing slip and slide across the kitchen floor. She loves to play with the kids in the neighborhood. Nothing like a good wrestling match."

Kalua's name was changed from Chloe to Butterball when she was adopted by a lady who'd had several Chows over the years and was delighted to once again share her life and home with her precious new baby! Mom learned very quickly that her new baby was a real "Ferdinand", so all of the plants have had to be moved to new locations where they couldn't be eaten. Butter exhibited entropian, so was taken in to the ophthalmologist. Surgery was scheduled, and performed in September 2000.

Butter's new mom decided that she did not agree with the rescue group's policies and failed to meet her obligations as dictated by contract. Consequently, it was agreed that it would be best if the rescue group were to take Butter back. Butter's name was eventually changed to Kalua.

When Kalua came back to the rescue group, she had a skin problem and had lost much of her hair. She has since gained weight and her hair has grown back in. She was quite shy with strangers and a bit scared, but now she is very well socialized and loves playing with every one. She will bark at people when they pass by us on adoption days and don't stop to pet her and say hello. She just can't understand why anyone would want to pass her by without paying her some attention.

Kalua loves getting scratches, hugs, and kisses, and is constantly coming to you for them. She will pester you until you stop doing whatever you are busy with and pay attention to her alone. Kalua deserved to have a loving family where she could get tons of attention, hugs, and kisses. And that is exactly what she got. She has a mom, dad, and sisters, along with a few cats. Kalua is a very lucky lil girl and is cherished and prized as a special member of her family.
