Nikita Keoki (aka Megan)

Megan was kept in a 4' X 8' kennel and wasn't paid attention to other than being thrown food and water once a day. The neighbor felt the Chow was jealous of her dog since she walked it in the yard. Megan had gotten out once about 3 months before being released to the shelter and attacked the neighbor's beagle. After that the owners kept Megan in a garage where she did not even see the light of day. The day of the second attack, the teenage son had opened the garage door to feed her and she slipped out the door. After that, the family decided they could no longer keep her.

Megan arrived at the shelter in a very neglected condition. Her entire coat was matted down to the skin, which had to be painful. The tips of her ears and part of her nose were bald from fly bites. She had no idea that her name was supposed to be the one the family had given her so she was renamed and now responds to Megan. Megan was spayed in February of 2000. Unfortunately, she was heartworm positive and began treatment 2 weeks post surgery.

Megan did great and became the darling of the shelter. They found that she was normally only dog aggressive if the other dog were to start something first. They found that while walking through the kennels and with dogs on leashes, she was willing to be friends if they were.

Megan is very sweet and affectionate, giving big face and neck kisses. She is very energetic in the play yard, where she would make grunting noises and played aggressively making some people afraid of her. She would sometimes put her teeth around the handler's hand or arm but never bit down and released immediately when told "NO". Megan also loves to play ball. She is very well behaved indoors and could often be found lying at the handler's feet under the desk.

Megan had been delivered to the rescue group 17 March 2000, ostensibly to be placed in a forever home that night. However, upon visiting with the potential new owner, the man decided that he didn't want to adopt her after all. So, Megan was taken to adoption day the next morning. That afternoon some young men came into the store and happened upon us as we were packing to leave for the day. They took one look at Megan and fell in love with the playful little girl.

The gentlemen put in an application on Megan as we packed. The next week we did the home inspection and Megan settled right in at their home immediately and played with them while we were there. They took possession of Megan that following Monday evening. When we arrived with Megan, they had already been out shopping for her and gotten her some toys and food. The next evening we contacted them to see how everything had gone and found that they played with her late into the night. Megan is now named Nikita Keoki and has a wonderful loving home where she is being well cared for and spoiled rotten! ;-] A much better life than she started out with for certain!!!
