Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by Richard H. Pitcairn, Susan Hubble Pitcairn, Michael W. Fox

"from Ardrossan, Alberta,Canada, 12/09/97 -- Most useful pet book on the market today.
Dr.Pitcairn's new updated edition is without a doubt, one of the most useful books in market place. I feel any pet owner should have copy in their library and refer back often. We have placed our Borzoi on the natural diet and I am impressed with results. Since we breed Borozi, we are always looking to increase the quality of each animal. Feeding this diet does just that. They are happier, have more vitality, increase coat growth and the pigment in the coat is deeper. I also appreciate the work that went into the vaccination section and we have changed our protocol for vaccines in our kennel. Thank You! I would appreciate any way to get more information on the subject of vaccinations and thyroid disorders asw ell as immune problems caused by 'over vaccinations'. I feel this is very true and many animals could easily do with less vaccination. Finda vet in your area who is willing to follow the guidelines in this book. Sandy Cook Swiftess Borzoi swiftess@agt.net"

"A Lot of Helpful Information Here
I bought this book about 2 years ago and I am very pleased with it. I started making my own cat food as suggested and I solved a chronic loose stool problem that wasn't even helped with perscription pet food from the vet. The recipes are very detailed and I like that. He really explains exactly what you need to make the food and gives a lot of choices and substitutions. This is the first holistic pet book I would recommed to someone wanting information on holistic pet care. I find it more reliable because it is written by a vet rather than a layperson."

The Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog by Wendy Volhard, Kerry L. Brown

"A reader from New England , December 30, 1998
It's THE book to have, Naturally! This book deserves more than just 5 stars. Besides complete instructions to formulating a natural diet for any kind of dog, incuding puppies and sick pets, Volhard and Brown explain the details of alternative veterinary care options. Also included is an entire section on toxins and allergies, a guide to herbal therapy, and a list of vitamins, minerals, and supplements and there purposes. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the natural diet or in dog health in general. In fact, I recommend this book to simply anyone!"

"A reader from Owego, New York , August 23, 1998
Absolutely necessary for anyone wanting a healthy dog! This book has been a "bible" in my house--but I may have to buy a second copy with all my friends borrowing it! The complete view of nutrition, and listings of homeopathic remedies have guided me in decisions that have helped my dogs thrive, instead of just survive. My next puppy will start right from the beginning!"

Food Pets Die for : Shocking Facts About Pet Food by Ann N. Martin, Michael W. Fox

"The publisher, NewSage Press, February 19, 1998
First book to investigate the commercial pet food industry. As the publisher of Ann N. Martin's book, "Food Pets Die For," I am most impressed with the thorough and meticulous investigation the author undertook for seven years. Her findings and facts are verified and footnoted throughout the book, revealing a shocking but truthful inside look at what is legally allowed in pet food. Martin has taken tremendous risks to uncover information that has never been published before. Her book is the first to look at this issue in depth. Hopefully, more voices will follow, and speak out on this issue. We at NewSage Press applaud her commitment as a consumer and as an author to challenge and expose the underpinnings of a multi-billion dollar industry---the pet food industry. Veterinarian Dr. Michael W. Fox says, "Ann Martin is to the pet food industry what Rachel Carson was to the petro-chemical-pesticide industry."Gar Smith of "Earth Island Journal," wrote, "Ann Martin's book rips the curtain off one of the most suppressed news stories of the decade...It took courage and amazing persistence to write this astounding book." I agree! Maureen R. Michelson Publisher, NewSage Press"

Communicating with Your Dog: A Humane Approach to Dog Training by Ted Baer

Found Dogs: Tales of Strays Who Landed on Their Feet by Elise Lufkin

Dog Training Basics by Miriam Fields-Babineau

"Joan M. from Fairfax, VA, August 23, 1998
Great book for novice dog trainers. As the owner of a very hyper 3 year old dog, I found this book to be very informative. Ms. Fields-Babineau explains all steps in an easy to follow manner which will give the trainer and the dog confidence as they build their relationship. This is a great book for anyone looking to make their dog a part of their family, not just a pet. If these training methods are followed, an owner will assit their dog to grow into a confident, well mannered, and well behaved part of the family. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an easy to follow, confidence building training experience."

"kiactor@erols.com from Virginia, July 11, 1998
Excellent basic book. We have two very energetic Australian Shepards. This book was an excellent choice for home training. We follwed the instructions and procedures. The results were wonderful. It is a pleasure to walk with our dogs now. The recomendation of the Halti collar helped greatly. The methods suggested are all positive reenforcement using praise and love. I have recomended this book and the halti collar to our friends. The use of the knee to stop the dogs from jumping was completly misunderstood by the previous review. I quote from the book "For dogs that are insensitive to the aural reprimand-or if you simply do not have your pennycan with you-then you must either push off or knock your dog down as he jumps up. Do this with your knee in his chest on his way up or with your hand if he is already on you. Always say "NO!" when pushing him off." A simply method in which you are placing your knee in the dogs way not kneeing him as you may think. I highly recommend this book for the information, methods, and equipment it suggests."

"The author, Miriam Fields-Babineau, July 10, 1998
Humane step-by-step training for novice dog owners. This book teaches dog owners how to train using canine language and practical situation techniques. With a step-by-step format it is easy to learn and implement. Dog Training Basics teaches the reader how to train any dog of any age regardless of the behavioral problems. While some dogs respond well to only verbal reprimand others require physical reprimand. This does not mean hitting, yelling or anything abusive. It simply means using the dog's own language to make your message clear. This is done with vocal tones and alpha dog behavior training. These methods have been used for years by the Monks of New Skete, Matthew Margolis, Joachim Volhard and more very well known and honored trainers. These methods work!"

Dog Training with a Head Halter by Miriam Fields-Babineau

Book Description:
"More and more dog trainers are using head halters as the most effective and humane way to correct canine behavior problems. The author explains how, despite appearances, head halters are not muzzles. Head halters teach through logic, and allow dogs more freedom and comfort than most other training devices. The author goes on to discuss the basics of good training-- praise, patience, and persistence, how to make your dog sit at attention, walk on a leash, obey verbal and hand commands, behave inside the home, and ultimately, behave and enjoy the outdoors without need for collar and leash restraints. Approximately 80 full-color photos."

"A reader, April 20, 1997
This is an excellent inside view of what goes on in our world where animals are used for research and advises us to watch our furry friends as they could be at risk. It should be read by everyone who owns a pet, dog or cat especially, as it will make you aware of how vulnerable your companion is. I never thought about people stealing dogs from their own back yard or creeps answering the "free to good home" pet ads in the newspapers then selling these animals to research for big bucks until I read this book. Pet theft is a profitable business to some. It is sad and shocking for this type of activity to occur, but it does. It has taught me some invaluable safety tips for protecting my "best friends." I will no longer leave them unattended for any length of time. We must protect and safeguard our furry friends like we do our children. After all, don't you consider your pet(s) a part of your family ?! If you care about your pet(s), this is one book you must read. Ramona Hand (rhand@net-connect.net)"
