Princess & Her Puppies

29 July 2000
Princess is around 1 year old. She is great with kids. The vet wants to wait a month before spaying her to make sure the pups have been well weaned. Princess gets along great with other dogs and loves to go for car rides. Her puppies were reportedly born 4/28/00.
Princess was rescued from the animal shelter in Queenstown, MD. Her mate was also brought in but he was destroyed immediately. The puppies and Princess were about to be put down when the animal control officer decided she would take them and contact a rescue group. She contacted us when the puppies were about 2 weeks old. One of our members drove up there to pick up Princess and the pups. Princess was very protective about her puppies, but after seeing that she would not be hurt, she relaxed. They were taken to the vet, Princess was great with everyone there, and has been wonderful ever since! The puppies were named by the original foster care giver: Cindy, Chloe, Karma, & Buttercup.
Princess came to the rescue group in very bad physical condition. She is now looking much better, but her coat is still not healthy. Sometimes when you pet her, her hair will break off as it is so very brittle. She still needs to put on more weight, but at least she is now being fed good food and is being well cared for.
Princess is a very sweet small girl who loves to give kisses. She gets excited when you come into the room and has to be right there with you. She is very playful and loved running and jumping with the other Chows, including her 3 remaining puppies. She would get up on the couch with you to get attention, but was a little unsure about hugs at times. She would allow you to pick her up onto your lap for a little while. At first she was still a bit skittish with men, but would readily go to women. She got much better with men after a while though, giving kisses on the hand.
We took Princess to many adoption days and had no applications on her until one day we received a call from one of our past adoptive families saying that they had seen her on our website and were interested in seeing if she would get along in their household. So, we took her over for a couple of sleepovers to see how she would do with their existing pets, both cats and dogs alike. Her new mom thought that she would make a great playmate for the other kid they had adopted from us. The first dog they'd gotten, Sam, was epileptic and sometimes Harry who they had adopted from us would play a bit more roughly with him than their dad felt comfortable with. So mom thought that if Harry had someone else to play rough with, it would be better for Sam. Sure enough, Harry and Princess hit it off immediately and played really well with one another. Sam really liked Princess as well and would join in play with them. By the time we went to pick Princess up after her weekend with the family, Sam and Harry were sad to see her go. The mom and dad talked it over and decided that indeed Princess would make a great addition to the mix, especially since she really didn't pay the cats any mind, having already lived with cats in the past.

Due to renovations, they wanted to wait until things were a bit more settled in the house itself before bringing Princess home permanently. But as things would have it, the renovations looked like they would take much longer than they wanted to wait. So, Princess moved into her new forever home November 2000.
Princess and her family have a wonderful home together and are very happy. We even get to baby-sit from time to time as their house sitter can't take care of all of them. Every time we do, Sam is so happy to see Harry and Princess return from their holiday away from home.

3/10/06: Sadly we have lost beloved Princess as of this day. She was found to have an irreversible illness and her family lovingly allowed her to travel to the other side of the rainbow bridge with heavy hearts. We will all (we the humans and Princess' litter of girls) miss our beautiful, sweet, loving lil girl. She has gone to join all our other fur babies who have gone before her to await the day when we all will be reunited.
