Raider

November 28, 1999

Raider who is a blue Chow had been given up by a lady who had originally rescued him from a very bad situation. She found when about to move to California that she was not going to be able to take him with her. So, she called us, asking that we find him a new forever home.
Raider was supposedly very much against being groomed and wouldn't let anyone but her groom him without being muzzled. He was said to also want to eat cats and to have a very sensitive stomach, preventing him from being fed anything but this one type of food she gave him.
We took Raider into our system, got him set up in his foster home and promptly found that all the things we had been told about him were not accurate. He immediately began eating the food we fed the rest of the rescues and had no problems. He of course had to be groomed and gave absolutely no problems, but rather would sit calmly while he was groomed, rather enjoying it.
One day while at one of our adoption days, Raider was seen by a young couple. The young lady immediately wanted him, but her fiance wanted one of the puppies that had been born in our guestroom. Besides that, we told them Raider was not available as there was a family who had come in earlier that day and had already put in an appliction on him. So, Raider eventually went to his new home with his new mom, dad, and two little girls.
Unfortunately, the lady of the house found out very quickly that she was highly allergic to Raider. During the day at work she didn't experience any problems, but the moment she came home she would cease being able to breath. Finally her Dr. told her that their newly acquired Chow had to go as he would be the death of her. So, very sadly, with many tears shed, the family sent dad back to us with Raider as none of the ladies of the house could bear with attending his departure with us.
Upon getting Raider back, we immediately called the young couple to ask if they were still interested in Raider. The answer was a resounding YES! We got together and they adopted our precious Rai.
In the beginning, the young lady wasn't sure that the adoption was going to work out as she was aware of Rai's supposed problems with cats. And yes, he was chasing the cats when he first went home with them. But we advised them on how to work with the cats and Rai until everything settled down. Although they weren't sure it ever would while in the midst of the turmoil within the home, they did as we suggested and found that eventually it all did work out. The discovery came one day when the lady of the house had gone upstairs to find Rai and one of the cats curled up with one another licking each others' ears.
Since then, Rai's new mom has become one of our rescue associates, helping us at all our adoption days, going on long distance rescue runs, and fostering as able.
