Rusty

Meet Rusty.  When his rescuers moved to Varina, VA, they would always see Rusty chained to a tree or dog house. They have lived there almost 7 years. Every now and then they’d see him walking down the road, his held high and just looked like he was really enjoying the moment of freedom he had. Recently one of Rusty's owners, an elderly couple, passed away. The grown children came, cleaned the surviving parent’s home, put it up for sale, unchained Rusty and LEFT him there to fend for himself. Yep, that's right, adults left this poor fella, just got into their car and drove away. What were they thinking? The next door neighbor took him in and fed him, but he still lived outdoors. His rescuers tried to help by giving the neighbor who’d taken him in dog food for him, but the lady is 85 and just cannot handle the day to day responsibilities of a dog. His rescuers have found someone who offered to foster Rusty until he can find a permanent home.

Rusty had been taken to the SPCA, but they said he wasn't friendly enough to adopt out. His rescuers work with a rescue group and believe that it is quite possible that Rusty just needs to get to know a person a bit before he warms up, which is not unusual for dogs that have lived in the type of situation he has. He has seemed to bond to his present benefactor and had bonded to the woman that took care of him, following her all over her yard as she was doing her gardening. His present foster reports that he is very affectionate, rides well in the car, lets her brush him, and is learning to walk on lead. Rusty would probably be better suited to a home without small children and perhaps without other dogs. He is still intact but has an appointment to be neutered. His health status is unknown as yet since he isn't scheduled to see the vet until next week. His rescuers will take care of his health care while he is there.

The SPCA vet estimates Rusty’s age at 5, but like his rescuers said, they have seen him around there for almost 7 years; his muzzle is starting to gray and his right ear is crunched up, possibly an injury or birth defect. He is a sweet boy and needs a patient hand and loving home to live out the rest of his life. Hopefully his abandonment will turn out to be to his benefit.  If you think you have space in your home and hearts for Rusty, please contact Jennifer:  cell-804 339-8411; jasan1909@earthlink.net.
