Sable

Sable is a beautiful deep red female, born 2/21/92. She was originally owned by a military family in Louisiana who found themselves being transferred to a place where they couldn't take her, so gave her to another family at the base where they were then stationed. The second family transferred to VA; and upon finding themselves being transferred to where they couldn't have her, they called us to take her.

Sable had never been medicated against heartworms and had stage 3 when we got her. She had never been properly socialized either, so we had to socialize her before we could place her. We finally got her to a point where she could be placed after many months of work and she went home with a family who had her for about two and a half years.

Unfortunately, the family's dynamics changed, and she was found to have been neglected. We received a call one cold winter day saying that she'd been found tangled up in a wooded area not far from where she was living. We drove there immediately to retrieve her. Upon our arrival, the gentleman who had found her was waiting for us and keeping an eye on her until we could get there. She was filthy, matted, and hungry. The moment she saw Michael, she ran up to him, threw her paws around his legs, and hugged him, giving kisses galore. As soon as her tie out was released from the underbrush, she ran to me and did the same. We walked her over to the car and she jumped right in for us and then let us put her seatbelt on her. As soon as we got Sable home, we gave her a bath. It was sooooooo cute! She talked the entire time, so we got out the video camera and filmed it.

Sable had apparently been abused, as she would suddenly growl at me if I moved a certain way when she was near me. It has taken the better part of a year and a half for her to come around to where she lets me hug and kiss her freely without her growling or backing away. She never had a problem with Michael doing that from the moment we got her back.

Now she's a wonderful, very affectionate, loyal, love of a Chow...she'll kiss you soggy!!!...but until she gets to know you, she's likely to snap to see your reaction...if you back off scared, she has buffaloed you and now has the upper hand...if you stand your ground, she respects you and becomes your best friend...so we have been looking for that VERY special home and understanding owner who will work with her instead of expecting to change her overnight...who will allow her the space she needs...who will make sure no one else tries to push her beyond her limits...she takes special care and love...but she is the best!
