Sinbad

2/3/2000

Sinbad was dropped off at the Lenoir County SPCA shelter in Kinston, NC by his owners. He was a very scared little boy who had been discarded by the family he thought was his. The ladies at the shelter took very good care of him and tried to reassure him. He was such a sweet little boy that they of course called us to ask if we would be able to take him. Unfortunately, being as all our foster homes had been full since March 1999, we were unable to take him.
Finally one day they called to ask if there was any way we could take him as his time at the shelter was at an end. Fortunately, we had a family who had just called earlier that was looking for a young, small, black, male Chow. So we called the family and asked if they'd be interested in him, sight-unseen--they immediately said that they would.
Our associate, Kat, made the arrangements with the ladies from the shelter for us to meet at our usual place at the border. Meanwhile, the new family was anxiously awaiting Sinbad's arrival and had begun collecting an assortment of toys and things for him. Thursday came along finally, and Kat and I drove down to pick Sinbad up.
When we got to the appointed meeting place, Sinbad was in the back of the car waiting for us. Kat stuck her finger in the window and the small Chow immediately began licking it. Holly and Camilla opened up the vehicle and we got Sinbad out to transfer into ours. The poor little boy was scared and didn't know what to think. We put a harness on him and attached the seatbelt before driving back up the road to Northern Virginia.
By the time we'd gotten to Richmond, Sinbad had chewed a couple of pieces off of his soft plastic toy, so we decided to make a stop at the local PetsMart to get him something else to chew on. We picked out a couple of stuffed squeaky toys and a hoof, and got him a rescue nametag before getting back on the interstate. As I was out of collars, we stopped off at Kat's home on the way back to get one of the collars she had in supply for Sinbad. We finally got to the house, introduced Sinbad to the other Chows, and got him settled in for the night.
Friday evening Sinbad got a much-needed bath and brushing before we headed out to his new home. His new family was very excited when we finally arrived with their new family member. Sinbad immediately found one of the new toys his new mom had gotten for him and began playing. He investigated his new home and got familiar with the children. We took the "family portrait" seen at the top of this page for our collection and then prepared to leave for home. The entire family got their coats on and walked out the door with us to take Sinbad for his first walk around the complex of his new home.
Sinbad is a very lucky little boy as he was at the end of his very short 9-month life when a family with a lot of love took him into their hearts and home. Unfortunately, due to medical complications within the family, they are not able to keep him. So they are fostering him until we can find him a new home.
While I was home in the islands visiting my family April 2000, Sinbad found his new forever home. He is well loved and is very happy with his new family.
