Sugar Bear

One of the clients at Catawba Heights Animal Hospital in Belmont, NC found an elderly Chow Chow wandering down the road. The dog was one huge mat of brown hair all over her body (later they found out she is actually black). The mat was so tight; she was sensitive to touch on her back and could not even wag her tail because of the weight of the hair. They could not even tell what sex the dog was.  The client was nice enough to pay our groomer $100 to shave her immediately.  Once cleaned up and shaved she then brought her back up to the hospital to have her examined and vaccinated.  The Chow Chow was wearing a collar with a valid rabies tag, which they traced through animal control and found that her original owner had given her away. They contacted the original owner; whom showed no interest in wanting her back.  That was when they also found out that her name is “Sugar Bear”.

Upon closer examination they found out that Sugar Bear is at least 10 years of age.  They also discovered that she can’t hear well, she has cataracts, and could possibly need eyelid surgery in the future; she is also heartworm positive.  The doctor does think she has been spayed. The client that found her can not keep her and is torn, at one point considered putting her to sleep.  Sugar Bear is a very loving and gentle dog and deserves to spend the rest of her days being treated the way she should have been all along.  If you know of ANYONE who can help, please pass word of Sugar Bear along or get in touch with them as soon as possible. It is important that word spread quickly about Sugar Bear, because her time there may be limited. The client is willing to transport Sugar Bear a considerable distance if she has to.

If you think you may have space in your home and heart for Sugar Bear who has obviously been abandoned in the time of life she needed her humans most, please contact the staff of Catawba Heights:
